Member Services

The Ingham County Bar Association provides a wide variety of programs and activities for the benefit for its members, including:

BRIEFS

Our monthly newspaper, BRIEFS, provides substantive articles on many areas of the law as well as the latest information on happenings in our local legal community. Members consistently rate BRIEFS as their favorite membership benefit. Click here for more information on this outstanding publication.

Ingham County Legal News

During the summer of 2005, the ICBA and the Legal News entered into a 10-year cooperation agreement, under which all members of the ICBA will receive subscriptions to the 52-week per year Legal News publication as part of their regular annual membership dues in the ICBA. Additionally, ICBA members receive discounted rates for general advertising in the Legal News. The ICBA's monthly newspaper, BRIEFS (described above) is distributed as an insert in issues of the Legal News delivered to ICBA members. By adding the ICBA membership to its subscription base, the Ingham County Legal News is a publication legally permitted to publish legal notices and is now the paper of record” for the Ingham County legal community.

Luncheon Lecture Series

The ICBA offers two series of Luncheon Lectures, one in the Fall and the other in the Winter each year. These seminars cover a variety of timely and interesting legal topics. Guests speakers include local practitioners, judges, experts from other professions, officials from all levels of government, and more.  Typically held at the State Bar Building, conveniently located in downtown Lansing with free on-site or nearby low-cost parking, our Luncheon Lectures are an inexpensive way to keep abreast of recent developments in the law from those who are leaders in the field.

Bench/Bar Conferences

The Ingham County Bar Association works regularly with members of bar and the judiciary in Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton counties to continually improve the administration of justice in our community. Large Bench/Bar Conferences designed to enhance communications between members of the bar and the judiciary are held every other year. Our most recent conference was held February 2, 2008.   Please mark your calendar for the morning of Saturday, February 6, 2010, for our next conference.   Additional information will be available in the coming months.

Civic & Charitable Functions

Law Day Activities, including an essay contest for middle school students, and Peer Mediation Projects in a number of local school districts are utilized to help children to gain an understanding and appreciation of the law and civic responsibilities.

In addition, our Young Lawyers Section coordinates a Horn of Plenty Food & Clothing Drive for the Volunteers of America, a Young v. Old Lawyers Basketball Game benefiting Special Olympics, and other efforts as needed throughout the year.   Past efforts have included a fundraising event for Hurricane Katrina victims, work on local Habitat for Humanity building projects, and mentoring of high school English/Language Arts students through guided readings of classic literature.

Social Events

The ICBA hosts a number of social events allowing our members to meet on an informal basis throughout the year.

On May 22, 2009, over 200 members gathered for the 66th annual Shrimp Dinner. This year's menu featured nearly 300 pounds of shrimp specially prepared by local lawyers and judges, ham (for the non-shrimp eaters), potato salad, garden salad, greek salad, rolls, beer, and soft drinks.

The 5th annual Ingham County Bar Foundation Memorial Golf Classic took place on Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Country Club of Lansing.   Despite a rainy day, the event featured 18 holes of golf with cart at this beautiful private course, a luncheon, specialty games and prizes, and much more!

Our next Annual Awards Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, 2009, at the Country Club of Lansing.  Nomination forms for the Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award, Theodore W. Swift Civility Award, and Camille S. Abood Distinguished Volunteer Award will be available in September 2009. Please consider nominating a colleague worthy of recognition and join us for a fun-filled evening celebrating the achievements of the past year.

From time to time, other social events are planned to bring members together.   Please check our calendar for coming events!
