Description
Transforming Conflict. Strengthening Practice. Building Connections.
Where legal professionals come together to rethink conflict, sharpen their skills, and shape the future of dispute resolution.
Conflict is an inevitable part of the human experience and an essential part of the legal profession. This section will work together to navigate how can it make all the difference.
The ICBA Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Section of the local bar association is a dynamic, collaborative community for legal professionals who recognize that resolving disputes requires more than knowing the law. It requires creativity, strategy, communication, empathy, and the ability to help people move from conflict toward meaningful resolution.
Whether you are an experienced mediator, an accomplished litigator, an arbitrator, a judge, a transactional attorney, a newer practitioner, or simply curious about the evolving world of dispute resolution, the ADR Section offers a place to connect, learn, collaborate, and grow.
This is where traditional legal practice meets innovative problem-solving and where professionals come together to make a meaningful difference.
Why Join the ICBA ADR Section?
The practice of law is evolving. Clients increasingly need solutions that are efficient, cost-conscious, practical, and responsive to the real-world challenges underlying their disputes. ADR provides powerful tools to meet those needs, and our Section is committed to helping legal professionals understand, develop, and apply those tools with confidence.
Membership offers opportunities to:

More Than Meetings —> Meaningful Experiences
The ICBA ADR Section events are designed to be engaging, practical, and relevant to the realities of legal practice. We aim to create an environment where professionals can exchange ideas openly, learn from experienced practitioners, explore challenging questions, and leave with something valuable to bring back to their work.
Through educational programs, interactive discussions, professional networking, demonstrations, and skills-focused events, members can expect opportunities to explore topics such as:
- Mediation in Action: Facilitative and evaluative approaches, mediator strategies, difficult conversations, impasse-breaking techniques, and ethical challenges.
- Negotiation and Advocacy: Persuasion, negotiation psychology, client decision-making, strategic communication, and techniques for reaching durable agreements.
- Arbitration and Alternative Processes: Arbitration practice and administration, procedural fairness, emerging dispute resolution models, and the effective use of ADR in complex matters.
- ADR Across Practice Areas: Applications in family law, probate and estate disputes, business and commercial conflicts, employment matters, civil litigation, community disputes, and more.
- Ethics and Professional Responsibility: Confidentiality, impartiality, conflicts of interest, self-determination, professional boundaries, and the responsibilities that accompany dispute resolution.
- Innovation and the Future of ADR: Online dispute resolution, restorative practices, trauma-informed approaches, early intervention, and creative methods for addressing the needs beneath legal disputes.
- Real-World Case Studies: Candid conversations about challenging scenarios, lessons learned, practical dilemmas, and approaches that experienced professionals have found effective.
Our goal is to make every event an opportunity to gain a new insight, develop a useful skill, meet a valuable colleague, or discover a different way forward.
A Community for Every Stage of Your Career
You do not have to be a certified mediator or full-time ADR practitioner to belong here.
Experienced neutrals can share their knowledge and exchange ideas with colleagues. Litigators can explore how negotiation and mediation strategies strengthen case preparation and client representation. Transactional attorneys can develop tools for anticipating and preventing disputes. Newer attorneys can build foundational skills and professional relationships. Judges and other legal professionals can contribute perspectives that deepen our collective understanding of effective dispute resolution.
The ADR Section welcomes curiosity, encourages collaboration, and values the contributions of professionals with different backgrounds, practice areas, and levels of experience.
We believe the strongest professional communities are built when people are willing to learn from one another, challenge conventional thinking, and work together toward better outcomes.
Our Vision: Better Processes. Better Outcomes. Stronger Communities.
ADR is about more than settling cases. It is about helping people be heard, giving clients meaningful choices, preserving important relationships when possible, managing risk, conserving resources, and creating opportunities for solutions that litigation alone may not deliver.
It is also about strengthening the legal profession by equipping practitioners with the tools to address conflict thoughtfully, ethically, and effectively.
The ADR Section aspires to be a vibrant forum for education, collaboration, professional development, and innovation—a place where ideas become practice, relationships become partnerships, and conversations lead to meaningful change.
We invite you to be part of that work.
Join Us. Get Involved. Bring Your Ideas.
Whether you want to deepen your expertise, explore a new area of practice, meet colleagues who share your interests, contribute to an engaging program, or simply see what ADR can offer you and your clients, there is a place for you in the ADR Section.
Attend an event. Join a discussion. Share your experience. Bring a colleague. Suggest a topic. Help us create programs that are practical, inspiring, and relevant to the challenges legal professionals face every day.
The future of dispute resolution is shaped by the people willing to engage, collaborate, and innovate. We invite you to be one of them.
